I have MS Office 2003 Student edition. My Outlook was working fine until
last night. An automatic update ran itself on my computer (not sure exactly
what the update was - I think it was an XP update) and my computer shut
itself down. After re-booting, everything is working properly except
Outlook, which is not sending or receiving emails. In fact, at this point, I
can't even get it to open again. When it was open earlier today and I was
getting error message, it said something about the server but I didn't write
it down. I checked with my ISP and they verified all of the settings are
fine and said it's a Microsoft problem. Of course, even though it seems
clear to me that the automatic update caused this problem, MS is telling me I
have to pay to get support to fix the problem. Hopefully, someone on this
newsgroup can help!

thanks,

Use System Restore; choose a point prior to the installation of the updates.

Not everyone has such difficulties using the Windows Update web site.

The next time Windows Update runs, one of two things will happen:

The update will succeed.

The update will fail with error; and the error can be copied. At that point,
there will be better information about how to proceed.

I am not expert but I think I have the same problem with outlook. the
security update to outlook keeps fouling it up. you can see if that is the
problem by logging in as admin, going to my computer, add/remove probrams
with show updates at the top checked. then, remove the outlook security
update dated the night before you had problems. if outlook still doesn't
work, MS will update in another day or so so the update will be back. If it
works, I asked the question about two questions above yours titled 'security
update outlook 2003 stops email'. someone explains how to stop the automatic
update by MS.

I didn't ask a question.

I have the same problem
Task pop-server.tx.com –sending reported error 0x800CCC78 unable to send the
message. Please verify the email address in your account properties. The
server responded: 053 Authentication is required to send mail as (my email
address)
Technical help desk at Time Warner Roadrunner indicated that there is a
Registry error with Outlook and my email address needs to me re-entered in
the Registry and previous settings cleared.
How do I do that??
