As of today (July 15 2014), Gmail turned off basic authentication. Anyone NOT using two step verification is receiving send and receive errors today. You have two choices: enable two step and use app passwords in clients that don’t support pin codes or turn basic auth back on. Two step auth is more secure and is recommended (but it can be annoying).
